Day 4 of the repeat review project. I loved Les Mis and I’m a little disappointed I didn’t go into it further.

I had never seen Les Mis on stage prior to seeing this movie. Now that i have, I’d really like to see it.

This movie was enchanting, from start to finish i was hooked on the characters and their failures and successes. Let’s see if i can explain the plot decently (I might paraphrase from IMDB).

The story takes place in 19th century France and focuses on Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) who is being hunted by policeman Javert (Russel Crow) over a series of years for breaking his parole. During that time, he meets factory worker Fantine (Ann Hathaway)  and agrees to care for her Daughter, Corset (Amanda Seyfried), after Fantine passes. As the synopsis says, the lives of Valjean and Corset would change forever.

The movie follows three periods: The first is Valjean being released from prison and ultimately finding refuge with a local monistary. The second, which takes place roughly eight years later, finds Valjean posing as Monsieur Madeleine and realizing he is being chased by Javert – we also meet Fantine, Corset and the audacious Monsieur and Madame Thenardier (brilliantly played by Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter) during this time as well. The last scene plants all of those characters, and a few others, in the middle of the June Rebellion.

The best picture buzz that is following this movie is warranted. It is shot beautifully and the  songs are breath taking. I actually really like the way the movie was shot during the songs. The big numbers had the full grandiose aesthetic feel of a Broadway musical but the monologue musical numbers – the songs where it is just one person singing – were not overdone, which was something i really respected. They were simplistic and in some cases minimalistic, which i really appreciated because it gave credence to the words and emotions the actor was conveying.

Bottom Line: Go watch it and you’ll get hooked. I can’t wait to buy it when it comes out. A. It will be best picture.

Welcome to the empty recesses of my mind! I'm a recent college graduate realizing a Creative Writing degree was a bad idea. Give me a pity like. Or you could check out the about sections (on the front page and about this author page) on my blog to learn a little more about me. Whatever. https://thebohemianrockstarpresents.wordpress.com/

What do you think? Do you agree? Do you love it? Or am i a complete tool? Any response is welcome!
