With those sad, swollen dark eyes she asked me
“Will you be able to fix my hard heart?”
I looked at her, with compassion to see,
and told her I wouldn’t know where to start.
She sighed and looked out the dirty window;
I sit down slowly then lay beside her,
Consider everything she has been through,
Will she ever get any real closure?
The stars shine on the room and silence grows
louder than our beating hearts and the crickets
chirp along in unison as time goes.
I wonder who else shares in our secrets?
Eventually we fall into sleep –
It’s the only way these feelings retreat.
