This prompt really made me think of this:
Personally, I like the blues. I do some of my best writing when I’m feeling like that. It’s probably why my poetry has sort of a gothic/romantic sensibility. I also really love blues music. BB. King, Eric Clapton, Howlin’ Wolf, Jonny Lang, Marc Broussard, Joss Stone – I love things that make me feel an emotion like that.
But, if I want to balance myself out (because being happy is fun too) I really rely on music and movies. A good, upbeat song or a superhero movie (those always seem to have really positive endings – I think it’s tied to their themes of empowerment) and I just fade away for a little bit – try to find myself in them.
Doing stuff (going for a drive, a photo walk, sports) can help too. I typically have more of a positive outlook after those types of things. I think what works the best, for me, is doing something the exact opposite of what has me done. If I’m feeling bad about A, then I go see what Z is doing. If B pissed me off, I go hang with Y. Make sense?
Above all things there is always the “stop being sad and start being awesome” approach. I’ve done that from time to time. True Story.
