There is this speech in Kevin Smith’s “Dogma” that Chris Rock gives about beliefs and ideas. It always rang true to me.
Why is that important for this prompt? I think people who have beliefs, like Rock says, are willing to die for them – they never surrender. People who have ideas are more akin to change.
I’d love to come on here and give this prompt 1000 words on why it is important to have beliefs in some sort of gothic/romantic fashion but I don’t think I can. I honestly think beliefs can be destructive. Going back to the clip, the Prophet (Rock) starts the crux of his speech by saying something like “the shit that gets carried out in his name…” and I agree with that. I see the destructive qualities in that. If you want to be spiritual and religious that’s fine – I have no problem with that (I actually have a new-found appreciation for it) -but be willing to accept other ideas. Realize that who you are isn’t wrapped up in one aspect of your life.
Part of me never wants to surrender. I want to die by the sword and go down with the ship. But I don’t want to negatively impact other people’s lives in doing so. I guess I am somewhere in the grey on the issue. Where are you?
