God this movie was so good. I say that a lot after movies. I tend to get swept up in the experience.
But what a fucking experience.
Here is the plot, according to IMDB:
Faced with both her hot-tempered father’s fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love.
The best way to think of this movie is it is an account of a people living in a post-katrina bayou area, living off the land and resisting conforming to the people on the other side of the levee (oh and there a odd, kinda metaphorical, sci-fi impending doom sub plot).
Why you should see the movie: Because you want to become inspired with the very primal natures of humanity. You have a desire to relearn the loyalty to the beasts around you (a loyalty humans sometimes stray from). Or because you want to see two very good acting performances from Hushpuppy (Quvenzhane Wallis) and her daddy Wink (Dwight Henry).
Why it won’t win best picture: I don’t know who saw it. The movie was a sundance gem that really didn’t see much major play in big markets until June/July-ish. All of the other pictures (or at least the majority) were released sometime in the fall season.
Should you rent it? Hell Yeah, i just got it in the Playstation Store for $4. It was a great watch and it is shot beautifully (plus there are a couple of really good scenes between Hushpuppy and Wink that will just get at you). Go find it!
