“The threat of hot sauce”
Multiple people are working on tributes for you nan and being the way I am, I would be remised if I didn’t add my two cents.
Now I have been away from the cape for a long time so my memories of people are not as strong as everyone else. I’m sure there will be a lot of “huh, what” jokes, so I’m not going to go that route.
I have two distinct memories of you. One of them I can’t recall the entire conversation (mainly because I may have been intoxicated at the time) – so I’m not going to talk about that. The second, well, is one I can write about.
I remember being little, between the ages of five and 10, at the house in Mashpee. It was a Sunday (they usually were Sundays) and everyone was gathered around that small kitchen table. Now a young Darcy and myself were about to go outside. But before we exited we were told, by you, to “be good or else.” Now I cannot recall a time (in my youth) where I did something to rouse a negative reaction out of anyone. But being the inquisitive youth, I was predisposed to ask “or else what?”
At that time, I was told of countless occasions when my Uncles, Aunts and Father would misbehave and receive a punishment of Hot Sauce on their tongue. I remember the testimony of my father, declaring it one of the worst punishments of his childhood. So, like any young kid in front of their grandparents, I was intimidated. I made sure my sister and myself were extra cautious outside. In every other venture around them, I was always on guard (mainly because I always heard that story (or at least reference to it).
Fast forward to now. I have been in New Mexico for what will be seven years by the time I come back home. I have started to think about things: what I am proud of, the multiple things I have done wrong, and what I can learn going forward.
Something that falls into the last category: I LOVE hot sauce. I have no clue why that was a viable threat. Hot Sauce is awesome. I remember, if we were at the house in Mashpee during the lunch hour, we would have Mac and Cheese. Hot Sauce on Mac and Cheese is DELICIOUS. Like, that was the meal of my 2009. It’s all I would eat. In hindsight, I wish I was more of a jackass when I was younger; just so I could get a little hot sauce on my Mac and Cheese.
Love you Nan, I can’t wait to see you and the rest of the family when I get back.
